Set Up Curbox
Curbox needs a few special permissions to do its job. This page walks you through each one. The whole process takes about five minutes.
Install the App
Use the fdroid app (not website please, takes longer to setup) to install curbox.
Play Console Warnings and virus flags
Honestly big corps just don’t like curbox because it destroys their business. Your phone’s security is just panicking and flagging the app as a virus because it needs deep control over your phone to block other apps. But it’s actually completely safe for two main reasons:
Open source Nature -First, the app has an “open kitchen” policy where its code is totally public, meaning tech experts all over the world are constantly checking it to make sure the creator isn’t sneaking in anything shady.
Never connects to internet
- Second, and most importantly, the app literally does not have the ability to connect to the internet. Because your phone physically locks it out from going online, it is 100% impossible for it to spy on you or send your personal data anywhere, so your stuff is completely safe.
Here’s how to temporarily turn off play protect:
-
Open the Play Store: Launch the Google Play Store app on the Android phone.
-
Tap the profile icon: Tap the profile picture or initial in the top right corner of the screen.
-
Select Play Protect: Find and tap on Play Protect in the menu that pops up.
-
Open Settings: Tap the gear icon (Settings) in the top right corner of the Play Protect screen.
-
Turn off scanning: This stops the virus warnings. Toggle off the switch that says Scan apps with Play Protect.
-
Confirm the change: Tap Turn off on the popup window to confirm. (The phone might ask for the PIN or fingerprint here).
Grant Permissions
When you first open Curbox, an onboarding screen guides you through a few permissions. You can grant them one by one, or use Shizuku to grant them all automatically.
-
Screen Overlay This lets Curbox display a pause screen on top of other apps when a block triggers. Tap the button, find Curbox in the list, and turn on Display over other apps.
-
Notifications Curbox uses a small notification to keep its service running in the background. Tap the button and allow notifications.
-
Do Not Disturb Allows curbox to turn on dnd according to your schedules.
-
App Blocker Accessibility This is the main permission. It lets Curbox see which app is on screen so it can block it when needed. Tap the button, find Curbox in the list, and turn it on.
-
Usage Tracker Accessibility This lets Curbox track how long you spend in each app. Tap the button, find Curbox in the list, and turn it on.
